THE OSCAR EDIT 2020 – Best Animated Features

Let’s start with one of my favorite Oscar Edit categories – ANIMATED FEATURES

As you may (or may not) know, I‘m bit of an Oscar Creature. For 15 years (yup, this year marks my 15th Oscar Anniversary) I have been watching every nominated film I could get my hands on. I rated all the local DVD rental places, ordered DVD from everywhere under the sun and went to the theatre like I was renting it. Nowadays, with Amazon Prime, Netflix etc. it has become significantly easier for me to access nominated films and I appreciate it a lot. Yes, I could never get to have them all but most I truly saw, only 1 or 2 films were ever missing from the big pool of nominees each year. In case you are wondering, yes, it cost a pretty penny way back when to order in DVD from the US etc. – but I did it anyways.

So, here is my first overview and rating of one of my most favourite categories, I hope you like it as much as me!

KLAUS

  • Production: Netflix
  • Duration: 96 min.
  • Rating:

Such a beautifully crafted little film. I am known to love animated films but usually only the ones in the lines of Tim Burton an Co. Rather dark and sarcastic, less kids friendly. However, even though KLAUS has darkish elements to it, I feel it should be an addition to the classic Christmas movie round up from now on. I thoroughly enjoyed it, even shed a tear at the end.

The storyline was done brilliantly and the moral of the film so true in our day and age. I don’t want to spoil the storyline by revealing the plot, but I think it‘s a beautiful animated feature Christmas film.

TOY STORY 4

  • Production: Pixar
  • Duration: 100 min.
  • Rating:

Confession Time – I am not a TS fan. Never was and yes, in case you are wondering, I have seen all parts. Never fully got into the franchise, maybe it was just not what I was looking for. Honestly dreaded having to see another one, figuring it would turn out being just as bad as the previous parts. You can imagine my surprise when only 20 min. in, I was fully invested into the story. Loved the way they put the it together. I highly recommend watching it even if you haven’t enjoyed the other parts. They finally won me over.

HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON – HIDDEN KINGDOM

  • Production: Dream Works
  • Duration: 104 min.
  • Rating:

I really enjoyed the very first instalment – it was fun, new and a quirky storyline. This is the 3rd instalment and I actually had high hopes… too high it seemed. The animation itself is amazing, really. But for some reason, I didn‘t get on with the storyline at all. Found myself on the phone scrolling instead of watching quite often. The background graphics especially are truly beautiful but not enough to make me enjoy the film as I should have.

J’AI PERDU MON CORPSE

  • Production: Netflix / Rezo
  • Duration: 81 min.
  • Rating:

People will hate me for my opinion on this film, but I am an honest person so here it goes… I didn‘t like it. I watch every film in its original language so for this, it was French, a language I adore but this time around not even the language could save the film for me. This is a truly grown up animated feature – nothing I‘d ever show a kid but even with all its many accolades. Yes, this is truly a meaningful film, but it felt so heavy and at one point I just wished for it to be over. Had the highest hops for this one but turned out to be my last favourite of them all.

MISSING LINK

  • Production: Annapurna & Laika
  • Duration: 93 min.
  • Rating:

Stop Motion films have always held a very soft spot in my heart. This isn‘t Chris Butlers first stop motion venture – he previously directed the Oscar nominated film Para Norman. Even tho, I wasn’t that fond of his previous work I really enjoyed MISSING LINK. The Storyline is never boring, the characters fun and entertaining and I believe it‘s truly a film for all ages. Highly recommend this one – it is my personal Oscar Edit pick for the Oscar.
